I’m a huge fan of author Donald Miller. (Blue Like Jazz, Searching for God Knows What) As far as Christian authors go, he is among the smartest and most relevant in modern times. He was given the opportunity to lead the benediction at the Democratic National Convention taking place in Denver, CO on its opening night. The video and transript are posted on his site, but I’ve stolen them and put them on mine for your convenience. Please enjoy.
Father God,
This week, as the world looks on, help the leaders in this room create a civil dialogue about our future.
We need you, God, as individuals and also as a nation.
We need you to protect us from our enemies, but also from ourselves, because we are easily tempted toward apathy.
Give us a passion to advance opportunities for the least of these, for widows and orphans, for single moms and children whose fathers have left.
Give us the eyes to see them, and the ears to hear them, and hands willing to serve them.
Help us serve people, not just causes. And stand up to specific injustices rather than vague notions.
Give those in this room who have power, along with those who will meet next week, the courage to work together to finally provide health care to those who don’t have any, and a living wage so families can thrive rather than struggle.
Help us figure out how to pay teachers what they deserve and give children an equal opportunity to get a college education.
Help us figure out the balance between economic opportunity and corporate gluttony.
We have tried to solve these problems ourselves but they are still there. We need your help.
Father, will you restore our moral standing in the world.
A lot of people don’t like us but that’s because they don’t know the heart of the average American.
Will you give us favor and forgiveness, along with our allies around the world.
Help us be an example of humility and strength once again.
Lastly, father, unify us.
Even in our diversity help us see how much we have in common.
And unify us not just in our ideas and in our sentiments—but in our actions, as we look around and figure out something we can do to help create an America even greater than the one we have come to cherish.
God we know that you are good.
Thank you for blessing us in so many ways as Americans.
I make these requests in the name of your son, Jesus, who gave his own life against the forces of injustice.
Let Him be our example.
Amen.
How can a man who calls himself a Christian, pray for people who murder innocent babies in the womb. It is worse thatn slavery. I will never read any of his books. Christians don’t murder the unborn. The cardinal who rebuked Nancy Pelosi told it the way that God sees the baby is formed in the womb and the word says that God knew us at tha time, God told me this also. When Donald Miller stands before God what will he say about not warning the mob that you can’t kill and enter God’s kingdom.
I hope that Christians all over the world will take God at His word and come back to giving life to the baby in the womg. SaintPeg8
“How can a man who calls himself a Christian, pray for people who murder innocent babies in the womb.”
Jesus hung out with sinners all the time. And prayed for them I’m sure.
“I will never read any of his books.”
Maybe if you did, you’d understand his positions more clearly.
“Christians don’t murder the unborn.”
Let’s hope followers of Christ do not murder the unborn. I’m confident that Donald Miller has never carried out an abortion, nor does he condone such. He was simply praying for a group of politicians.
“I hope that Christians all over the world will take God at His word and come back to giving life to the baby in the womb.”
Me too. I also hope Christians all over the world will take God at His word and come back to feeding and clothing the poor, taking care of the sick and weary and loving our neighbors and enemies.
Even if Donald Miller was to stand up and say he is a Democrat, I don’t think that makes him a Baby Killer. In the same way that a Christian who stands up and says he is a Republican is not a war-mongerer. I am sure that Donald is just as opposed to abortion as the average Christian, but that is not the only issue on the table. There are also issues like poverty, war, greed, that Donald, and even I agree are not handled well in the Republican party, and I by the way am a Republican.
Also he wasn’t there to represent any political agenda, all he was there to do, or at least all he did do was pray that the leaders of our country would come together to help solve all of our problems, including abortion.
Thanks for the post Ian.
The video of Christianity Today magazine interviewing Don before the benediction was pretty good too. I posted it on my blog today:

For the person bring up abortion, they might want to read this:

The Republicans brought us Roe v Wade. Yes, it is true.
